In 2008, United Fund of Greater Mount Airy and Pilot Mountain United Fund merged to from the even stronger United Fund of Surry. We are now providing support to twenty six local non-profit organizations in Dobson, Pilot Mountain, Mount Airy and the bordering counties of Virginia.

On July 20th 1956, a group of caring people got together to form "United Fund of Greater Mount Airy."
The meeting was attended by: Howard O. Woltz, Raymond Smith, James Hadley, James Combs, Cullen O'Dell, Clark Lackey, Jim Vaughn, Dennis Moody, Earl Watson, William K. Woltz, Mrs. Joe Fowler, Mrs. Bruce Malmo, Mrs. Marjorie Yokely, C. W. Cockrell, M. A. Thomas, Mrs. Ed Early, Hugh Merritt, George Sparger, Dr. R. Franklin, John F. Woltz, Mrs. Robert Smith.
Those elected for office were: Howard Woltz, President Dennis Moody, First Vice President Jim Vaughn, Second Vice President Mrs. F. G. Wynn, Secretary James Combs, Treasurer

Within the next month the chairman of the campaign, Ben Graves, was selected and the goal was set at $36,733 with the American Red Cross proposed to receive the greatest portion of the money at $8,503.
That first campaign was highly successful. Exceeding the goal by 23%, in just a mere 24 days after the campaign began.
For over 50 years, United Fund of Surry has been actively supporting member agencies by building financial support through fundraising campaigns. Its annual campaigns have raised over $8 million to support member agencies, making United Fund of Surry the largest fund raising organization in Surry County.
