New United Fund Change Racer Located at Southern Community Bank on Renfro

Employees at AES designed and built the new United Fund of Surry Change Racer in time to be debuted at their campaign kick-off: Downtown Rocks and Runs a few weeks ago.  It’s second “pit stop” is the lobby of Southern Community Bank on Renfro Street where people can drop change in one of three slots along the top, watch their coin race to the finish activating sound and lights along the way, and reach the finish line at the bottom.  Of course the real winners are the people that United Fund of Surry agencies help each and every day.

Angie Cagle of AES explains, “The coin machine is based on the “Plinko” concept.   Marty Goins, Sr. Electronics Engineering Technician came up with the design concept. Copperhead Graphics created the race graphic and Brandon Martin, Facility Maintenance Specialist designed the cabinet and peg placement.  Justin Barley, Electronics Engineer designed and re-engineered the electronic components: the sound activation, the plasma disc and the 1st or 2nd place response when the coin drops.”  She goes on to say, “Once a coin is dropped into a slot on the top of the cabinet the race car engine revs up and the center plasma disc lights up in response to the sound of coins dropping through the pegs, then as the coin finishes its “route” a voice comes on and says, ‘You finished in first place,’ or ‘You finished in second place.’  This was the first product of this type designed and built by AES, and we are very pleased with result.”

“Southern Community Bank is the pacesetter for our 2011-2012 campaign, meaning they are the first business to hold a employee campaign and a fundraiser for the United Fund of Surry.  It seems only fitting that their customers be among the first to try out the Power of Change Racer,” says Beth Pequeno, Campaign Manager for United Fund of Surry.

The United Fund of Surry funds 26 agencies serving youth development, the special needs population, and elderly/hospice care.  These agencies provide such services as emergency medical services, delivering meals to the home bound, child abuse/neglect intervention, medical care for working poor, food for needy, and housing for low income families, etc.  The United Fund of Surry also funds 2-1-1 the number to call if you are in need of services, much like 911 is for emergencies.  2-1-1 is a resource center connecting callers who have needs with agencies who provide services. All the money raised by the United Fund of Surry stays locally.  The United Fund of Surry is governed by a volunteer board of directors. Jordan Pike wins $500 AES Dash for the Cash at Downtown Rocks and Runs Saturday

Jordan Pike walked away with $500 Saturday, August 20 after winning the AES sponsored Dash for the Cash at the United Fund of Surry’s Downtown Rocks and Runs event.  This event officially kicked off the organization’s 2011-2012 campaign.  Pike was one of five runners whose bib number was selected by computer and held secret until after the race.  He was the first of those five to cross the finish line, thus winning the contest.
“We had a fantastic kick-off and had 187 registered runners which is more than double the amount from last year.” announces Angie Cagle, campaign chair.  “Turn out for the concert was great as well and we are officially on our way to reaching our goal of $525,000 this year.”  This was the fourth year to have a Downtown Rocks event and only the second year for the 5K portion.
The Kids Fun Run sponsored by Tarheel Converter and Core also saw more runners this year and each child received a ribbon for participating and each first place winner in their age and gender group also received a trophy.
“This year’s event brought in over $5,800 with sponsorships more than doubling this year as well,” explains campaign manager, Beth Pequeno.  “We are so grateful to our main sponsor, Dr. Robb Peterson, Orthodontics, and all the other sponsors who make putting on an event such as this possible.”
